I'm currently serving as the Accent and Dialect coach for SCHOOL GIRLS; OR, THE AFRICAN MEAN GIRLS PLAY by Jocelyn Bioh and directed by Lydia Fort at the Hangar Theatre in Ithaca, NY. I worked with the actors on developing a Ghanaian accent. The show opens on June 15th. Click HERE for more info.
I am excited to be joining the Play Incubation Collective's 2022 Developmental Residency as a creative advisor for Aria Acevedo's play in development, Return to Abya Yala.
April was also an exciting month for Olvidados: A Mexican American Corrido! The workshop production collaboration between the UMass Amherst Department of Theater and Breath of Fire Latina Theatre Ensemble, debuted at UMass Amherst April 7th - 9th, 2022.
On April 12th, Olvidados received its New York City premiere as part of the Latiné Musical Theatre Lab's 4xLatiné new musicals showcase.
Olvidados: A Mexican American Corrido has been accepted into the Latiné Musical Theatre Lab's 4x15 event at Teatro Latea in NYC! Moises Vázquez and I are one of four writing teams who will have a 15-minute excerpt of our work shared at this exciting showcase of brand new music theatre works in development!
The excerpts will be staged and fully sung by professional actors and directors. Even more inspiring - every show in the 4x15 is written by Latiné writers.
Tickets will be on sale soon, so if you want to see a bit of our work and hang out with me in NYC on April 12th, you can follow the Latiné Musical Theatre Lab website for more information.
The Smith College Department of Theatre's production of Twilight: Los Angeles, 1992, written by Anna Deveare Smith and directed by Kyle Boatwright, opens on March 3rd! I coached the actors in the production on a variety of accents and idiolects, including Korean and Mexican-American. More information here.
My original play, Olvidados: A Mexican American Corrido, will be presented as a staged reading, streaming live on Zoom, on October 6th at 6:00 PM EST. The reading will be followed by a post-show discussion facilitated by production dramaturg and UMass Professor Dr. Priscilla Page. The reading is directed by Breath of Fire Artistic Director Sara Guerrero. If you'd like to attend the reading, please fill out this Google form.
I am currently in residence at Breath of Fire Latina Theater Ensemble, workshopping her original play, Olvidados: A Mexican American Corrido. Breath of Fire, based in Santa Ana, California, is an award-winning theater company, and Orange County's only Latina theater ensemble. The workshop production is being directed by Breath of Fire's founding Artistic Director, Sara Guerrero, with original music by Breath of Fire company member Moises Vázquez.
In June, I was also awarded a very generous Faculty Research/Healey Endowment Grant from UMass in support of the workshop production, to be produced at the UMass Department of Theater in Spring 2022.
