posture

Oral posture refers to a dialect or accent's "home base" in terms of articulatory settings - specifically the jaw, the lips, the tongue, the cheeks, and the velum (soft palate).

Overall, there is a sense of relaxation and openness in the action of the articulators.

JAW

  • The jaw feels very released in this dialect, almost like the jaw cradles the vowels

LIPS

  • relaxed, but the outer ring of the orbicularis oris may tense, especially when making /r/ sounds

TONGUE

  • Has a tendency to pull back and/or brace for /r/ sounds

CHEEKS

  • Fairly relaxed in this accent
